Field polarization and polarization charge distributions in plasmon resonant nanoparticles

چکیده
We study the plasmon resonances for small two-dimensional silver particles (nanowires) with elliptical or triangular shapes in the 20 nm size range. While the elliptical particle has only two resonances, a well known fact, we demonstrate that the triangular particle displays a much more complex behaviour with several resonances over a broad wavelength range. Using animations of the field amplitude and field polarization, we investigate the properties of these different resonances. The field distribution associated with each plasmon resonance can be related to the polarization charges on the surface of the particles. Implications for the design of plasmon resonant structures with specific properties, for example, for nano-optics or surface enhanced Raman scattering are discussed.

Mathematical analysis of plasmonic nanoparticles : the scalar case ∗
Localized surface plasmons are charge density oscillations confined to metallic nanoparticles. Excitation of localized surface plasmons by an electromagnetic field at an incident wavelength where resonance occurs results in a strong light scattering and an enhancement of the local electromagnetic fields. This paper is devoted to the mathematical modeling of plasmonic nanoparticles. Its aim is t...

The magneto-optical activity, namely the polarization conversion capabilities of high-index, non-absorbing, core-shell dielectric nanospheres is theoretically analyzed. We show that, in analogy with their plasmonic counterparts, the polarization conversion in resonant dielectric particles is linked to the amount of electromagnetic field probing the magneto-optical material in the system. Howeve...

The polarization sensitivity of optical resonant dipole antennas is investigated numerically using the Green’s tensor technique. The electric field-intensity in the feed-gap of the antenna is calculated as function of the polarization of the incident field. A simple analytical model is proposed that matches the numerical data very well. While a very strong polarization sensitivity can be achiev...

Colloidal noble metal (plasmonic) nanostructures are finding increasing use in a variety of photothermal applications that range from nanoparticle synthesis to bioimaging to medical therapy. In many applications, a pulsed laser is used to excite the plasmonic nanostructures at their plasmon resonant frequency, which results in a peak absorption of incident photons and highly localized (sub-wave...
